Sometimes my eyes are fairly sensitive to bright light, so when using Firefox and opening up a New Tab, the blaring white background would be irritating. It turns out the solution for this is to go to about:config and change the browser.display.background_color setting. To change the background colour to a dull grey, set it to #cccccc. I use #d4d0c8, which matches the rest of the Firefox user interface when using the “classic” theme in Windows XP.
