While travelling on the train to Melbourne some months ago I saw a group of kite-flying enthusiasts on the beach between Edithvale & Aspendale. This was no ordinary small group of people. They were serious. I saw several large kites, spread apart for at least a kilometre, roughly between the two railway stations. Distanced apart far enough so their lines could not tangle, and presumably too far apart to talk to each other.

Would they talk among themselves later over a coffee, about how well their kite flew? About kite flying techniques? Why all at once? Was it all just so that I would write about it months later?

Actually, now that I think of it, I don’t recall seeing the kite flyers themselves, just the kites. Maybe they were all secured to fence posts (to fence off the beach vegetation from people trampling it). But that would be a lot of effort to go to, and where would be the fun in that?

One day I might see them again…
